The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is an annual Federal grant from USDA to all 50 states. The purpose of the grant is to increase fresh fruit and vegetable consumption by students in school. To apply, schools must be elementary schools; serve lunch in the NSLP; have a minimum of 50% of their enrollment eligible for free and reduced-price meals; and, submit the annual application.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are served as snacks to all registered students in attendance on the day the snack is served. It is offered at no cost to the student and is served outside the other meal periods. The goals of the FFVP are to increase the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to which children are exposed; increase children’s consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables; and, have a positive impact on children’s current and future health.
